A 90-Day Winter Routine in Medellín That Does Not Feel Like a Vacation
A repeatable three-month rhythm with errands, exercise, conversation and flexible outings rather than nonstop sightseeing.
The novelty of a new city usually wears off before the end of a three-month rental. That is not a problem. The moment you know where to buy fruit, when the laundry gets done and which café has the comfortable chairs is when a winter stay begins to feel like living somewhere rather than visiting it.
Week one: solve the practical questions
Use the first few days to learn the neighborhood in daylight, test the apartment and organize transport and phone service. Choose one familiar supermarket and one easy place to eat. Leave room for jet lag, weather and simple mistakes. You do not need an elaborate social calendar before you know whether the mattress is comfortable and the lift works.
Weeks two through four: create anchors
Establish two or three recurring activities: a morning walk on a comfortable route, a language lesson, a community class or a standing coffee with friends. Verify schedules directly with organizers; classes and meetup groups can move or close. Keep one day with no formal plan. If you work remotely, define work hours that respect your obligations and make a reliable backup for connectivity.
Months two and three: decide what to keep
Review what is actually working. Maybe the park walk is better than an organized excursion; maybe you want to try another neighborhood before extending. If volunteering interests you, check whether the organization welcomes short-term participants and what screening is required. Do not assume a tourist stay authorizes paid local work. Continue checking your permitted stay dates and any extension requirements; your routine does not stop the immigration calendar.
Before you commit: the six-point checklist
- Set two regular low-pressure weekly activities.
- Make errands possible without a long car ride.
- Verify classes or groups before recommending them.
- Keep a weather-day alternative at home.
- Review costs and energy after the first month.
- Track your authorized stay independently of your lease.
A practical next step
Plan three sample weeks, not ninety identical days. Leave room for family visits, tired afternoons, changes in weather and a spontaneous weekend away. The point is to know what an enjoyable ordinary Tuesday looks like.
