How to Inspect a Furnished Medellín Rental From Another Country
An exact live-video walkthrough script for verifying a furnished apartment before transferring money abroad.
You can learn more from a fifteen-minute live video call than from fifty carefully chosen listing photographs. The trick is to direct the tour yourself. A host who will not show the entrance, the hallway or the street deserves more questions before you book.
Ask for a continuous route, not a highlight reel
Begin outside the building. Ask the person holding the phone to show the curb, entrance step, gate, lobby, lift, hallway and door to the unit in one continuous sequence. Then go into every room. This reveals steps that have been cropped out of photographs and provides context for how close the apartment really is to the street. If the manager says the unit is occupied, request a second live call before payment.
Test the things photographs cannot
Have the operator open the windows, turn on hot water, run a speed test on the actual apartment Wi-Fi and stand silently near the bedroom window for thirty seconds. Ask them to show the mattress, refrigerator interior, available cookware and where guests do laundry. Request the exact date of the test and screenshots if internet reliability is essential for work or health calls. A speed-test screenshot from a different apartment proves nothing.
Verify the transaction separately
Get the full name and business details of the party you will pay, a written agreement identifying the exact unit, cancellation conditions, fees, and the dates included. For tourist accommodation, check any required RNT and building authorization; do not treat a thirty-day label as a universal legal exemption. For an ordinary urban residential lease, Colombia has separate rules, including restrictions on cash security deposits. If the operator cannot explain the contract category, have a local professional review it.
Before you commit: the six-point checklist
- Ask for one uncut entrance-to-bedroom video.
- Show the elevator working with the doors closed.
- Open the bedroom window and listen for traffic.
- Run a speed test on the apartment network.
- Check bed dimensions, cookware and laundry access.
- Match payee details to written rental documents.
A practical next step
Use this message: “Can we do a live video call from the sidewalk through the lobby, elevator and apartment? Please include a real-time Wi-Fi test, bedroom-window noise check and the name of the legal payee before I send funds.”
